History of Grama Panchayat
Mavelikara Thekkekara Grama Panchayat is a major village panchayat in Mavelikara taluk of Alappuzha district. The panchayat is located in the Onattukara region, about 5 km south of Mavelikara town. This location gives special importance to the panchayat, both geographically and administratively. The panchayat was officially formed on 15 June 1953. At that time, Mavelikara taluk was part of Kollam district, but after the state reorganisation in 1957, it was included in Alappuzha district. The panchayat, which has an area of 20 square kilometres, has 20 wards. As per the 2011 census, 42,516 people live here. The high literacy rate and good infrastructure facilities indicate the development level of the panchayat. During the Travancore rule, this area was one of the cultural centres of Onattukara. The name “Mavelikara” means the place where the great fence stood, and the name “Thekkekara” is derived from its southern part. In the agricultural sector, paddy cultivation and coconut cultivation are important. Due to its connection with the Kuttanad landscape, an agricultural lifestyle prevails here. Mavelikara Thekkekara is still notable as a grama panchayat that preserves tradition and development alike. The boundaries are Mavelikara Municipality and Thazhakkara Panchayat to the north, Thazhakkara and Chunakkara Panchayat to the east, Bharanikavu Panchayat to the south, and Chettikulangara Panchayat to the west.
